How to Move from Blogger to WordPress Using Your Own Domain Name

Wednesday, September 9, 2009 · 0 comments

You may have started out with a Blogger blog, but now you feel as if you've outgrown it. You want to give your readers more. You've heard that WordPress offers lots of options, and that it's easier to optimize it for the search engines, so you'll have an easier time increasing your readership. If you own your own domain, it's easy to move your Blogger blog and make it into a WordPress blog. This three-part series takes you step by step through the process.Almost every new person starts a blog with Blogger (www.blogger.com), a free blogging service owned by Google. This seems to be a practical solution at first for the following reasons:
• It is free; users do not need to spend money on registering domain names and hosting services.
• It is very easy to use and does not need an in-depth knowledge of web programming, unlike building entire web sites with PHP and ASP.
However, as time goes by, your knowledge of building websites will increase; so will your desire (and demand) for more website features to improve your users' experiences. Currently Blogger cannot support a lot of website features vital for building a stable and professional website.
This is when people starting wanting to use WordPress (wordpress.org), an open source blog publishing platform. Using WordPress offers an entirely different experience from using Blogger because it can handle two very important things:
• Website templates (using the PHP programming language).
• MySQL databases.
I will assume this doesn't scare you because of your experience in that field, but you need to be aware of one serious problem that can surely affect the profitability of your website. Moving from Blogger to WordPress means that you risk losing TRAFFIC and SEARCH ENGINE rankings.
This is particularly true if you have a great blog hosted before with Blogger and if you REALLY need to move to WordPress. In that case, keep reading this article.

AdSense Tips

Making AdSense fit your forum site

When you run a forum site, ad placement and formats are key to designing ads that will be successful but not intrusive to your regular users.
Map

Placement: Display your ad units where repeat users will notice them

* Because forum regulars tend to skip the header and go straight to the meat of the thread, placing your ad unit above or below the first post can be more effective than ads next to the logo.

* Place a leaderboard immediately after the last post. This provides users who make it to the end of a thread with a 'next step' when the content ends. Try to avoid placing it after the footer, though, as your readers will likely move to the next thread without seeing the ad.

Formats: Adapting your design for multiple ad units and limited space.

* Using multiple ad units, you can use a variety of formats to fill ad space throughout your site. Placing a skyscraper above the fold on the left side of your forum seems to produce slightly better performance than other positioning. However, when using multiple ad units throughout the page our horizontal bias still favors the leaderboard. Our heat map provides more details.

* Use horizontal link units, which are small enough to fit near the top of your forum just below the header. For the regular forum visitor, link units offer a wider range of relevant topics to browse.

However you choose to implement your ads, keep in mind that forums are highly interactive sites with regular users. Be sure to blend the ads nicely, so they don't appear overly intrusive - but don't blend them so well they mislead your users! Every forum site is different and you know your community best, so as always use your own judgment to create the most positive experience for your users.

Tip for making the most of revenue opportunities: Like most sites, forums can benefit from opting in to image ads. Supporting image ads increases the pool of ads - particularly cost-per-thousand-impression (CPM) ads - bidding to display on your site. Since forums tend to have lower clickthrough rates than other types of sites, CPM ads can improve revenue without the need for clicks. Keep in mind, however, that CPM ads come in both text and image formats

The possibilities might make wikis seem like a daunting system, but commitment to simplicity makes wiki tools a breeze.

Good Things about Wikis:

• Wikis Simplify Editing Your Website

• Wikis Keep Track of All Your Stuff

RSS Feeds

RSS is short for Rich Site Summary or Real Simple Syndication. To put it plainly, it is a way of distributing content information in an XML format. RSS delivers information as an XML file, and this XML file is called an RSS feed. This feed contains information as designated by the site's owner. So back on topic, RSS is used to distribute content to whoever wants it. By requesting the appropriate RSS feed, an end user can quickly find out the latest information posted on a website.

An aggregator (also known as a feed reader) accumulates RSS feeds for you, and distributes that information to you as you want. Some require a program to be uploaded, some do daily emails, and others integrate right into your browser. RSS is about distributing content quickly and easily. It also increases efficiency - instead of having to visit a site every day, by using RSS, you can automate the process and be notified when an update occurs.

How RSS works:

Example 1:
Your name is Mr. Joe, and you are a fan of five different blogs. You also end up wasting a lot of time visiting these blogs. So you turn to an RSS feed aggregator, and add their RSS feeds. Now, once a day (or however often you want), the reader will check the RSS feeds for each site, and notify you when there is an update.

Example 2:
Your name is Mr. Joe, and you live in Britain. You have a little website, and would like to have the latest sporting news on your website. You of course do not have time, so you turn to BBC, and use their sports RSS feed to incorporate sports news into your website.

Hence you can give RSS Feeds on your site to make the task easy for the users. Also RRS Feed can be optimized & used for increasing rankings of your website.

Important HTML Tags

Wednesday, February 4, 2009 · 0 comments

It is necessary for you to highlight certain parts of your website that you want your readers to look at. There are several tags in html which allows you to do so. For example – the headings [h1] [h2] [h3], Bold [strong], Italic [em] etc. The text inside your header tags (e.g. [h1]) is given very high importance by the search engine. Usually you can use them to define the page/post titles or the important sections of your website.

• Header Elements:
Header 1: Header 1 should be used to define the most important section of your page. Usually Header 1 is used for Site’s title or header text.

Header 2 & 3: Header 2 and 3 can be used for Page/Post titles or important sections of your pages. Separating your content with headers is a good practice as it makes your site more readable and easy to navigate.

Text Styles:

Bold: You can bold (e.g. [strong]) certain words which are of high importance. Sometimes it’s good to bold your keywords where appropriate. However overdoing this may get you penalized.

Italic: You can use the [em] tag to emphasize certain words which will appear in italic.

Quote: This is very useful when you are quoting from someone.

On Page Optimization

Introduction:

On-page optimization (on-page SEO) is what can be done on the pages of a website to maximise its performance in the search engines for target keywords. On-Page Optimization factors are related directly to the content and structure of the website. Truly speaking, if you can do proper on-page optimization for your website you can not only rank well in a search engine but also can increase the overall readability of your website for your visitors. The most important On Page optimization techniques include the Title - tag optimization, Meta - tags optimization, Content optimization, Important HTML tags, Keyword optimization, Link optimization and Image optimization.

Title - Tag Optimization

A site’s title tag is by far the most important on-page optimization element. This should be the first tag in the Head section of the page. There is evidence that search engines give more weight to factors higher up the page. A title tag should be short but descriptive enough for your visitors to identify you and your business. Title tag is the first thing that is shown & indexed by the search engines. So naturally it is given a very high importance – out of thousands results that a searcher sees, your site’s title has to be appealing enough for him to want to find out more information. On the other hand, your title has to be appealing enough to the search engine in order to rank you above thousands of other similar websites like yours.

Important points to be kept in mind while writing the Title for your website:

• The Title should not be more than 70 to 75 characters (with spaces), because search engines will not be able to read it & display the whole.
• Your Name/ Business Name / Site Name: This is very important for breading propose. If you feel that your customers may search you by your brand name than it’s also useful to put it somewhere in your title.
• Keywords: Keeping your targeted keywords in the Title is always of a great importance because search engines value the title more & if it contains your keyword then there is a definite chance to rank high. Don’t staff too many keywords in your title. Write a title which is readable to humans & also good for the search engine.

Meta - Tags Optimization

META-Tags are not as important any more as they used to be. Basically because people started using them to spam search engines, especially the keyword-tag was heavily used for that. Nevertheless there are still some important META-Tags that you should use and they are “Description” & “Keywords”. A site’s Meta description should contain a brief description of your website focusing on the areas and services that your business is specialized in. This small piece of text can be considered as a selling snippet, if a searcher finds it appealing he is likely to click and go inside your page to find out more information.

Important points to be kept in mind while writing the Meta tags for your website:

• The Description should not be more than 265 characters (with spaces) and Keywords up to 40 to 500 characters (with spaces) maximum.
• Include your Selling Point– Tell your customers what they want to hear through your site’s Meta Description, and you will definitely get some advantage over others in the SERP (Search Engine Result Page).
• Keywords – Including some of your keywords will give you some advantage in Google’s relevancy algorithm.

Content Optimization:

There is a good line for content in SEO: “Content is The King”. In fact, one of the most valuable things you’ll get out of developing a keyword strategy is a sense of what kind of content your visitors need. The most important thing about creating content for your site is to avoid creating duplicate content. The three main things you should be targeting while writing your content are:
1. Unique and well-written. The search engine spiders are looking for unique content and your visitors are looking for well-written content.
2. With articles come links.
3. With quality content comes even more links.

A unique and well written content carries a great importance. This is the backbone and purpose of your website's existence and if it takes more time to be created then give it, because it deserves it. When you are considering what content you want on your site you should keep this in mind:

Give your Audience Want they Want?

Create a solid, compelling content that will both grab your visitor's attention and at the same time, make them want what you have to offer. This is not the same as selling to them when you have the opportunity to speak to them face-to-face. You are working without the benefit of watching their expressions, speaking to them about their objections, or even understanding whether they are looking for information for a friend or if it is they themselves who require your services. This leaves you with a lot of room for content. In the online environment you have to deal with every question before they ask it, and make every person feel that you can help them even though you've never met.

If you have discussion forums, or blog then keep a link of it on your site, take user reviews, etc. you are actually creating a lot of content. Not only is this great for the user experience, it creates a great deal of keyword rich content. Content that you can use to bring links into your site, send anchor text to your other pages, and which may even bring visitors in from search results.

Yet another benefit that derives from having a website with great content is that, with time, your website itself will become a resource. If you provide great information that other people will find useful people will link to it naturally. Build a good site with quality content, keep it easily navigated and create sections for specific areas and you will find that people will link to your site.

Search engines always want new content, so feed them! Not only your website will grow automatically if you always add something to it, but also search engines tend to spider your website more often if they always find something new.

SEO - Some Important Points

Here are some important points to be kept in mind while including the keywords in the above parts of the website. Let’s see some important terms:

Keyword Frequency: It is how often a keyword appears on a page and in specific areas on a page.

Keyword Proximity: Describes how close keywords are to one another. This is one of many measurements search engines use to gauge a web site's relevance.

Keyword density: The number of times any keyword is repeated within a web page, expressed as a percentage of the total number of textual words on the page.

Keyword Stuffing: Keyword stuffing is the needless repetition of a keyword or keyword phrase in order to get higher ranking on search engines.

Looking on the above terms it would be clear that one should take a great care while using keywords in their website because search engines take into consideration all the above factors while deciding the relevance of your website. Don’t stuff keyword phrases together – spread them out throughout the text of your website. Bold or strong some keywords in the text as appropriate. Also put keywords into alt text and link text. Spiders prefer low keyword density, use keywords as they naturally make sense in text. The keyword density should be from 3% to 5%. If spiders feel that there is some keyword stuffing in the website then they may decrease your relevance your even penalize you.

Search Engine Optimization Process?

As such there is no fix procedure or fix steps for Search Engine Optimization (SEO) of a website. Some say follow these 7 steps while some say these are the best 10 steps, but the main point is that all the parameters should be included. According to the work done by me in Shrushti Web Solutions (SWS), I will say that SEO process can be classified into these 7 steps:

1. Keyword Research & Competition Analysis.
2. Website Design, Structure & Link Text.
3. On Page Optimization.
4. Off Page Optimization.
5. Social Media Optimization (SMO).
6. Pay Per Click Campaign (PPC).
7. Statistics Analysis.

Why can't the search engines figure out my site without SEO help?

Tuesday, February 3, 2009 · 0 comments

Search engines are always working towards improving their technology to crawl the web more deeply and return increasingly relevant results to users. However, there is and will always be a limit to how search engines can operate. Whereas the right moves can net you thousands of visitors and attention, the wrong moves can hide or bury your site deep in the search results where visibility is minimal. In addition to making content available to search engines, SEO can also help boost rankings, so that content that has been found will be placed where searchers will more readily see it. The online environment is becoming increasingly competitive and those companies who perform SEO will have a decided advantage in visitors and customers.

Why did I choose Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Process?

In Shrushti Web Solutions, we were not given only one kind of work or nor we had to work on a single website or subject. The work changed continuously & according to the requirement. We had to learn all the aspects of e-marketing and practically in our day to day work. We had to learn and implement basics of e-marketing, link building, developing, maintaining the sites, brainstorming for new ideas, find new methods or sites for e-marketing, keywords research, Pay Per Click (PPC), SEO & SMO etc.

As we were exposed to such an environment on Internet & to such a responsible working environment, new ideas & teaching given all the time, I wanted to show all this in my report. Also my personal interest from the beginning was in Search Engine Optimization. I was given the task to build a web site & to do SEO of it & I worked very hard for that site & learned complete SEO procedure & brought the site in the google rankings. So I choose SEO process as my project report topic as it covers many aspects of e-marketing & I will also be able to explain it in a better way as I have practically done this.

Social Media Optimization (SMO)

Thursday, January 29, 2009 · 1 comments

Social media optimization (SMO) is a set of methods for generating publicity through social media, online communities and community websites. Social media optimization is related to search engine marketing, but differs in several ways, primarily the focus on driving traffic from sources other than search engines, though improved search ranking is also a benefit of successful SMO. Social media optimization is in many ways connected as a technique to viral marketing where word of mouth is created not through friends or family but through the use of networking in social bookmarking sites. SMO includes various fields like RSS Feeds, content base sites, bookmarking & link submission, story & article submission, audio & video submission etc.

SMO can be categorized in following parts:
Content based sites:
There are certain kinds of content that just naturally spread socially. It does not matter what industry you are in and what boring products you sell, there is always some kind of content that can be created that will work. Whether it is creating widgets, making people laugh, or writing a whitepaper, it can be done. Know what type of content can work for you and create it. Help your content travel through RSS, email subscriptions, newsletters, embeds, mashups and e-books. Content bases sites include Squidoo, Kaboodle, Ning, Wetpaint, Newsvine, Newscloud, Likinn, Truemors etc.

Bookmarking & Link Submission Sites:
Everyone's doing it, sharing their bookmarks with the world. Not only is it convent to have all your bookmarks available in one spot, but it also gives your site more exposure. Adding content features like quick buttons to "add to del.icio.us" are one way to make the process of tagging pages easier, but we go beyond this, making sure pages include a list of relevant tags, suggested notes for a link (which come up automatically when you go to tag a site), and making sure to tag our pages first on popular social bookmarking sites (including more than just the homepage). Bookmark your way to better business with sites like del.icio.us, which invite users to organize and publicize interesting items through tagging and networking. Bookmarking sites include del.icio.us, StumbleUpon, Furl, Magnolia etc.

Story & Article Submission:
Upload stories and articles to drive traffic to your site or blog. Submit items often so that you'll gain a more loyal following and increase your presence on the site. Visitors can submit story and articles and browse articles in categories like technology, business, entertainment, sports and more. Share your favorite sites on the Web with potential clients and business partners by commenting on, uploading and ranking different newsworthy stories and articles. You can also create a member profile that directs traffic back to your company's Web site. Reddit, Digg, and Hugg etc are examples of story and article submission sites.

Photo, Audio & Video Submission:
Media can be an extremely powerful tool in marketing your website. People submit their photos, audio and video that are in a great demand now a days for may be getting popularity, or just for fun, or for money or may be they are promoting something. Videos are in a huge demand now a days specifically for getting reviews on some products. Various companies put out videos of the product that they have reviewed and get popularity & even a brand name. You will also probably be getting a photo or a video in first few pages of google search for something that you might be searching. Youtube, Flickr, Podcastalley etc are examples of such sites.

Social Networking Sites
Social media is an umbrella term that defines the various activities that integrate technology, social interaction, and the construction of words, pictures, videos and audio. This interaction, and the manner in which information is presented, depends on the varied perspectives and "building" of shared meaning among communities, as people share their stories, and understandings. The social-media sites provide excellent opportunities for businesses to advertise, promote specials, events or services, and feature published, knowledgeable employees. You will surely be aware of the famous word used now a days in india “Orkuting”, and you will surely be aware of various communities on it. This is the way social networking is used to promote business. Facebook , Orkut, MySpace etc are examples of this.

What do you mean by off shoring?

Friday, January 16, 2009 · 0 comments

No commonly accepted definition of "off shoring" exists, and the term has been used to include various international trade and foreign investment activities. Services that U.S.-based organizations purchase from abroad are considered imports. They may also be linked to U.S. firms' investments overseas -- for example, U.S. firms may invest in overseas affiliates as a replacement for, or as an alternative to, domestic production. In recent years, services offshoring has been facilitated by factors, such as the Internet, infrastructure growth in developing countries, and decreasing data transmission costs. Organizations' decisions to offshore services are influenced by potential benefits such as the availability of cheaper skilled labor and access to foreign markets, and by risks, such as geopolitical issues and infrastructure instability in countries that supply the services.'Offshoring' of services generally refers to an organization's purchase from other countries of services that it previously produced or purchased domestically.

Monitor Your Website Traffic

Saturday, January 10, 2009 · 0 comments

An online business website that depends on promotion and sales needs a good search engine marketing strategy to be successful and profitable. Generating targeted traffic to the website is the main function of a search engine marketing strategy. However, it has been observed that active traffic has seldom proved effective to the concerned websites.

A variety of different traffic building methods and techniques can be used to attract traffic to a particular website. One such widely used methods of search engine marketing that is used by online businesses to generate traffic is “pay per click”. Pay per click is an acceptable method used to attract traffic to your websites, however it is important to monitor it frequently to determine its efficacy in generating traffic that is beneficial to the project.

There are many businesses find paid campaigns prohibitively expensive and a drain on their already scarce resources. Such companies can opt for free campaigns that work on targeted marketing. SEO or search engine optimization is a free traffic generating campaign that is a part of search engine marketing. However, it too requires a lot of research and constant monitoring to produce the desired results. The keywords selected for SEO need to be relevant to the website concerned and also to the users queries. For search engine optimization to be effective in attracting traffic the websites should be listed in the first few pages.

Installing link exchange system is also recommended. In this system you have non-competitive websites link to your websites. This way you generate more traffic to your website from partner websites. Having professionally written articles related to your business also helps, the articles pose problems to visitors and offer your company's name as a solution thereby increasing the traffic. Updating articles on a weekly basis makes your website rich with content encouraging visitors to come back again and again and also visitors are more likely to recommend your sites to their friends and associates, thus increasing the traffic to your website. Distributing your articles throughout the net helps as more and more people are aware of your company's product and thus increasing traffic to your website.

WHY SEO (Search Engine Optimizer)?

Friday, January 9, 2009 · 0 comments

What is SEO?
Search Engine Optimization. The art of making your website relevant and important so that it ranks high in the search results for a particular word.

SEO can make the content of your web pages more relevant, more attractive, and more easily read by search engines and their crawling and indexing software.

Why would this be of great importance to you? Would it be important to you if customers were unable to find your telephone number or find the address of your business? I do not think that many businesses could survive for very long in this situation.

Of course, your current customers and persons already acquainted with your business would be likely to find your web site without difficulty. Wouldn't they?

Are you absolutely sure that your advertising has reached enough potential customers? Did you consider that some people simply do not read the newspapers? How about people who didn't get the issue of the magazine where you placed an expensive ad?

So, what about the search engines? Those people could just enter a few words into a text box, click a button, There is a link to your web site. Aren't search engines wonderful?
Yes, search engines can be wonderful, and the scenario above can happen, but not without some work. This is where SEO comes in.

What is Google Page Rank?

Thursday, January 8, 2009 · 0 comments

• Google Page Rank is simply Google's way of displaying how important a webpage is. Google assumes that when 1 webpage links to another webpage, it's actually "casting a vote" for the webpage. The more votes you have for your webpage, the more important your webpage will be.

• Google also takes into account the importance of other website's pages linking to your own webpage. If many webpages link to the website's webpage linking to you (i.e. They have a lot of "votes") then their vote will be of more importance and will increase your Page Rank more.See images below for a visual representation of what I mean...
